It won’t surprise you that at Bomberg Chiropractic, we see a lot of patients who are looking for relief from chronic head and neck pain. What might surprise you is that for a large number of those patients, I can offer them nearly immediate relief – sometimes in just one or two treatment sessions.
You may know someone who complains constantly about a nagging headache or has a self-diagnosed migraine. I’ve learned in my years of education, training and practice that while headaches are common, they are not normal. In fact, according to a study by Lancet Neurol in 2008, about 47% of the US population suffer from regular headaches. Since I started Bomberg Chiropractic, we see new patients reporting that they’ve suffered from chronic neck pain and headaches for 10, 15, even 25 years! They grow accustomed to the pain, and find treating their issue with over the counter medication like ibuprofen and acetaminophen is “good enough.” Many of these patients suffer from what is called a “cervicogenic headache” – it’s actually neck pain that masquerades as a headache The neck pain may be caused by an injury such as a concussion, long-term poor posture, poor ergonomics or another neck issue. These are the type of common headaches that respond best to a cervical adjustment of the vertebrae and have a good chance of immediate relief. Imagine their surprise when I tell them that there is a good possibility that after a few treatments, their pain may be gone!
15-20 percent of headaches fall in the cervicogenic headache category. This type of head pain usually starts in the back of the neck on one side and then spreads to the top or side of the head; occasionally this headache creates pain behind the eye.
How could the resolution to a chronic pain problem be so simple? First, to be clear, this kind of adjustment is not an effective treatment for conditions like confirmed migraines or cluster headaches. But for patients who can benefit from this type of cervical adjustment, the relief can be astonishingly fast. How? When a new patient comes in and reports a problem with chronic headaches, I ask additional questions and examine their neck to determine if the patient falls into the cervicogenic category. We get to work right away with an appropriate treatment, including vertebrae adjustment, which allows for better blood flow to the entire head and neck, as well as instructions on stretching, posture improvement, and addressing other environmental factors like ergonomic set up at work.
Here’s what one of my patients “M” said about the treatment she received at Bomberg Chiropractic for this kind of headache:
“Since seeing Dr. Bomberg my headaches have disappeared, I'm sleeping through the night again and I have far more energy every day.”
While I can’t promise that everyone I treat will see results like these, I am hopeful that most patients have great outcomes like this. In the three years since opening Bomberg Chiropractic, I have seen enough patients report similar results to M - in fact enough to really feel that it’s a matter of when you’ll feel better, not if you’ll feel better.
If you, or someone you care about suffers from regular, long-term headaches; or takes over the counter medications for migraines, know that there is hope for relief! With a simple conversation and brief exam, you can find out if this treatment can improve your life!
