A well-rounded diet will give your body the nutrients it needs each day. When establishing your regular diet, consider all five food groups. Each group can provide you with vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that your body requires to stay healthy. Bomberg Chiropractic offers chiropractic adjustment as well as tips for healthy living, including a comprehensive diet plan. We can help you make good eating choices so that you stay fit all year long. Below is a summary of the five food groups and the type of nutrients we recommend.

1. Vegetables and Legumes/Beans

Vegetables reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, strokes, and curb weight gain. They are a healthy source of minerals and vitamins (such as magnesium, vitamin C, and folate), dietary fiber and a range of phytochemicals including carotenoids. Examples of vegetables include broccoli, cabbage, potatoes, beans, tomatoes, and squash.

Recommended Daily Servings: Five

2. Fruit

We recommend that you eat whole fruits instead of drinking fruit juice. Whole fruits are high in dietary fiber and provide many benefits to your body. Eating different colored fruits will give you a variety of nutrients that can enhance and sustain your health. Fruits include apples, pears, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, bananas, grapes, etc.

Recommended Daily Servings: Two

3. Whole Grains / High Fiber Cereal

The majority of grain foods you eat should be whole grain, cutting out processed and packaged grain products as much as possible. Grains make up a wide range of foods including wheat, oats, rice, quinoa, and corn. You can eat grains whole or grind into flour to make a variety of foods such bread, pasta, noodles, and cereals.

Recommended Daily Servings: Four to Six

4. Lean Meats, Eggs, Tofu, Nuts, Seeds

Lean meats and protein include all beef, poultry, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds and legumes/beans. They are ‘protein rich’ This food group also provides a wide variety of other nutrients such as iodine, iron, zinc, vitamins, especially B12, and essential fatty acids.

Recommended Daily Servings: One to Three

5. Dairy

Many dairy products are excellent sources of protein and fat (the good kind). Yogurt and kefir contain beneficial probiotics, which help keep your digestive system healthy. Some cheeses have reduced levels of fat and salt so that you can eat more during the week. Otherwise, you should limit your cheese intake to two to three times weekly.

Recommended Daily Servings: Two to Three
